Shave your face for glowing skin!

Shave your face for glowing skin!

(Photo: short cocktail dresses)

Facial shaving, practised by Hollywood icons Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe in the '60s, is back in vogue

So you thought that the smooth and glowing skin of screen icons, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor was God-gifted? Not really, for these two actresses shaved their faces for that million dollar look!

Hollywood aesthetician Kate Somerville created quite a stir when she recently revealed this bizarre beauty secret of the stars. American TV personality Caroline Manzo also admitted to shaving her face for over 10 years. It's not just the celebs — in Japan, local beauty parlours offer facial shaving as a common beauty treatment. In fact, facial razors, specially designed for women, are an upcoming beauty tool in the world of cosmetics.

Host of beauty benefits

Shaving does offer an easier option to waxing, plucking and threading, but that's not all. According to cosmetic dermatologist and laser surgeon Dr Apratim Goel, "Shaving not only removes hair from the skin, but also takes care of problems like boils, acne, in-growths and rashes, leaving your face looking luminous. Unlike waxing and threading, it is non-traumatic and gentler on the skin." It is also believed to be a great exfoliator. With each stroke, you're peeling off dead skin cells from the surface and this lets your skin easily absorb the beauty products you use to invigorate your face. Apparently, shaving also keeps wrinkles at bay, which is why men usually develop fewer facial lines than women!

How often should you shave?

Women can shave their entire face and neck maximum once a week. In most cases, once every two weeks should suffice.

Debunking the myth

One of the biggest reasons why many women stay away from shaving as a form of hair removal is because of the notion that shaving makes the hair grow back thicker and darker. But that's untrue. "Contrary to popular belief, shaving has no

permanent effect on the hair follicle. So vellum hair (fine hair on the face) does not grow thicker or darker after shaving. Shaving simply cuts the hair at an angle, leaving it looking blunt," says Dr Oberoi. Hair texture and colour is decided by the hair roots, which are deep under the skin. 5 simple ways to help someone with dementia

5 simple ways to help someone with dementia

(Photo:womens formal dresses )

By the year 2015, India is expected to overtake the US to become the country with the largest number of people with dementia, according to the Dementia India Report 2010 pre pared by the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI).

In other words, even if you're lucky enough not to develop dementia during your lifetime, it's almost certain that you will know somebody who does. Here are five ways to help a person with dementia.

Connect with the person

Often just finding out about a person's history can help you understand them better -and give you things to talk about.

One true story that proves this theory is about an old woman with dementia in a care home. She was always tapping on the table and irritating people, until one day someone discovered she worked at Bletchley Park during the war and helped crack the famous Enigma code. All her tapping was actually Morse code.

Make surrounding dementia-friendly

Dementia can affect perception and vision, so shiny floors look wet and slippery, or swirly carpets look like snakes. Being aware of this and looking out for potential problems can help. For example, labelling how things work -such as kettles or TVs.

Be patient with them

A person with dementia can get easily confused and this can be very frightening. Avoid showing signs of anger or frustration -give them plenty of time to speak and keep calm -this will ensure they don't feel unduly anxious or stressed.

Avoid correction them

It's natural to want to `help along' if someone keeps forgetting important facts or events, for instance finishing a sentence for them -but experience proves this can leave both parties frustrated. Try embracing what they can remember instead.

Be sure to reminisce

Short-term memory loss is often a first sign of dementia, but that doesn't mean long-term memories are forgotten. So sharing old stories from the past can still bring a smile to someone's face and make them feel like themselves. Read more here:MarieAustralia long formal dresses

Make your home pet friendly

 Make your home pet friendly

(Photo: formal dresses online australia)

A four-legged friend can completely change the dynamics of your home. Pets are known to bring families closer and even reduce stress levels.

Playing with them can instantly improve your mood, but you have to make some alterations to your home to make it pet friendly. We list some tips to make your best friend feel more comfortable...

Check around your house and look for things that may be dangerous to your pet, such as choking, strangulation or electrocution hazards. Take a second look at cords and wires and ensure that they are short, so that your pet can't play with them.

Keep medicines at bay as they can prove dangerous if your pet accidently ingests your pills.

Ensure that foods such as baking soda and other masalas are stored in cabinets that your pet does not have access to. Also ensure that cleaning acid bottles or other detergents are locked away.

Replace open-top garbage bins with those that have lids. If your pet gets into your trash can, then chances are that he/she will eat harmful items that can be potentially poisonous.

Many houses have indoor plants, and while this may add to the visual appeal, if ingested, some plants can be toxic. Lilies are known to cause kidney failure in cats and other plants such as aloe vera are not safe for animals.

Most pets see the toilet as their water bowl, so keep the toilet lid down to eliminate the risk of poisoning and drowning. Or simply keep your toilet door shut.

Avoid using carpets as pets tend to soil them with their dirty paws; they are especially a nightmare to maintain during potty training. If you must use a carpet, pick a shade that matches the colour of your pet so that fur that he/she has shed is not as evident. Read more here:short cocktail dresses

Top 5 exercises to tone your lower half!

Top 5 exercises to tone your lower half!
(Photo:evening dresses australia )

Here are some of the sure shot exercises that will help you tone your lower body.

Workout for Sexy Lower Body # 1: Uphill Walking or Running

Walking and running are not only good for the lower body, but also for your heart, lungs, and bones. These cardio exercises also trim fat from your legs and butt. Add the intensity of an uphill climb with gravity pulling against you, and you will see the results dramatically.

If you're not ready for the uphill challenges, walking or running on a flat surface also strengthens lower body muscles. However, the more intense the workout, the faster you get results.

Workout for Sexy Lower Body # 2: Squats

Squats are one of the best exercises for toned legs and firmer butt. Plus, there are several variations that activate different muscles and make the workout more interesting.

Workout for Sexy Lower Body # 3: Deadlifts

If your glutes and hamstrings (back of thighs) need more attention, deadlifts are the best exercise for the job. You can boost the intensity by standing on a block or board, which puts more tension on muscles. However, if your goal is to build strength, you can lift more weight if you're not standing on an elevated surface.

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart

Hold a barbell in front of your body or two dumbbells at your sides

Look forward, and keep arms straight and knees slightly bent

Slowly bend hip joint - not waist - and knees, and lower weights as far as you can without bending your back

Squeeze glutes and lift weight back up

For beginners: Take 4 seconds to lower down and 2 seconds to rise up

Do 3 sets of 12 to 15 repetitions

Workout for Sexy Lower Body # 4: Step Ups

Step ups can strengthen and sculpt the quads (front of thighs) and glutes. Combining deadlifts and step ups is a great way to get a comprehensive lower body workout.

Stand behind a bench or box, holding a dumbbell in either hand

Place right leg on the bench with knee bent

Flex glutes and push with right leg to lift left leg onto the bench

Return left leg to the floor

After completing a set with the right leg, do a set with the left leg

Workout for Sexy Lower Body # 5: Standing Seesaw

This simple workout targets outer thighs, hips, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. All you need is one dumbbell and a step to stand on.

Place right foot on the step and let left leg hang off the side

Hold dumbbell in right hand and place left hand on your hip

Flex abs and keep back and legs straight

Slowly lift left leg out to the side as high as you can and raise right arm straight out to shoulder level, palm down

Return to starting position

Do 15 reps, then switch sides and repeat

The Bottom Line for Sexy Lower Body

Uphill cardio, squats, deadlifts, step ups, and standing seesaw are the five best lower body workouts for building strength, burning fat, and toning. But you probably shouldn't do them all in one session. Instead, change up your workout and switch between these exercises to optimise recovery and maximise results. 8 crucial 'measures' to a healthy you!

8 crucial 'measures' to a healthy you!
(Photo:MarieAustralia yellow formal dresses)

Here are 8 crucial numbers that can govern your health in the new year. Meet them, and you are fit as a fiddle

1) Blood pressure below 14090 mm hg

Blood pressure counts as high if it's over 14090 millimetres of mercury (mm Hg). The first number is your systolic pressure--the pressure when your heart is pumping blood. The second number measures your diastolic pressure, which is when your heart is between beats.

Levels from 120-13980-89 mm Hg can signal you're in the borderline high BP range and may be at risk of impending heart trouble. When your pressure is high, there's more resistance in your blood vessels. So your heart has to work harder with each pump to transport blood. Over time, this can stress the heart and leave you vulnerable to heart attack or stroke.

Set right: Blood pressure that is considerably high is best controlled with meds (generally thiazide diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or calcium channel blockers). Also, watch out your salt intake and exercise.

2) Blood sugar 70-100 mgdl (fasting)

Two tests can check for diabetes by meas uring your blood sugar: fasting glucose and A1C. Fasting glucose looks at your blood sugar after not eating for at least eight hours, while the A1C test (this must be below 5.7 per cent) gives you a trend of your blood sugar levels over the past three months. Both tests are used, but there is a chance that the fasting glucose test can miss people whose blood sugar levels become problematic only after eating. High blood sugar damages your blood vessels over time, which can lead to increased risk of heart attack or stroke, affects kidney and eye.

Set right: Exercise and a healthy diet can help control your blood sugar, especially if you're in the prediabetic range--100-125 mgdL on the fasting glucose test. Balance your workout routine with cardio and lifting and diet to reap its benefit.

3) Total cholesterol less than 200 mgdl

Cholesterol is a waxy substance in your cells that helps your body make hormones, Vitamin D, and bile acids for digestion. Your cholesterol number is made up of your levels for low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides. Too much cholesterol can raise your risk of heart disease. HDL (60 mgdL or over) is good cholesterol, because it exerts cardioprotective effects by reducing plaque in your arteries. LDL cholesterolLDL (below 160 mg dL) is stickier than HDL molecules, which make them likely to build up in your blood vessels and cause blockage over time. This is the bad cholesterol.

Set right: A healthy diet, weight loss, exercise and green tea can help lower cholesterol levels.

4) Waist size less than 32'' (women); 40'' inches (men)

Wrap it around your abdomen just above your hip bone then relax, exhale, and measure your waist. You want the number to be below 32 inches if you are a woman, and below 40 inches if you are a man. If your waist size is going up, it means you're accumulating abdominal fat, which is the worst kind of fat to have. It is worse because that visceral fat, which grows around your abdominal organs and underneath your abdominal wall, is hormonally different from the fat you can pinch on your arms and thighs. It is linked to heart disease and diabetes.

Set right: Add soluble fibre like oats or apples to a healthy diet, which is key to slowing down belly-fat progression as we grow older.

5) Exercise 150 minutes a week plus weight training

Exercise from your heart, for your heart. Men need 150 minutes of moderate exercise -brisk walking -and two sessions of total-body strength training each week. For a vigorous workout like running or jogging, you only need 75 minutes each week, plus the two sessions of strength training.

Set right:SET RIGHT: If you have high cholesterol, high BP, or suffer from heart disease, you might want to check with your doc before you take to a rigorous workout. Opt for a thrice-a-week intense yoga class. It is the best kind of full-body workout.

6) Triglycerides 150 mgdl or less

Triglycerides -a type of fat in your blood -are measured along with your cholesterol.High triglyceride levels contribute to plaque build up in your blood vessels, making them easier to clog. That puts you at risk of heart attack or stroke.

Set right: Added sugar in your meals, tea and coffee is the main culprit. Refined flour is another cause of the problem. Try and avoid it as far as you can.

7) Alcohol only two drinks a day

That's what is considered moderate drinking for men --a mark that may actually be helpful for your heart. Too much drinking, on the other hand, can damage your body.

Folks who drink too much alcohol may begin to feel drop in energy, fatigue, trouble concentrating, a rise in blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, and even weight gain due to the empty calories. In severe cases, they may begin to experience irreversible liver defect.

Set right:The first step is to be honest with yourself about how much you're actually drinking. If you're not counting the crushed beer cans in your room, or that hidden bottle of rum in your cupboard, it can be difficult to gauge your intake. For a week, jot down what you're drinking. Then, gradually, try to cut back.

8) Sleep 8 hours

Men who averaged this amount each night logged the fewest number of sick days per year. That's because skimping on shuteye can raise your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity-besides making you feel sapped of energy.

Set right: Cutting down on interruptions could help you catch more sleep. Make sure you stay away from gadgets at least an hour before hitting the sack.Read more at:Marie formal dresses

Sensors will lead to highly personalized care

Personalized medical technology
(Photo:princess formal dresses)

The future of health looks a lot like the fitness tracker you might already wear on your wrist or your waistband.

But instead of just keeping tabs on your activity level, high-tech sensors embedded throughout your home, your car and maybe even under your skin will keep tabs on your every waking moment.

And your sleeping moments too.

"A whole new day is coming," said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, considered a pioneer in the field of digital medicine.

This near-continuous data dump will revolutionize our healthcare system, Topol predicted, and will lead to micro-personalization of our diets, workouts, homes and even medical treatments.

The upshot, he said, is that this data onslaught puts control of your health back where it belongs: with you.

His new book, slyly titled "The Patient Will See You Now," documents the looming power shift, courtesy of our smartphones.

Here's what it might look like: Light, temperature and movement sensors in your bedroom will help you craft night after night of deep, peaceful sleep, allowing you to wake rested and energized — and without an alarm clock.

A tricked-out bathroom scale might reflect not just your weight but also the air quality in your home, your stress level and your resting heart rate. An elevated heart rate could suggest a cold is on the way. So you might want to take it easy for the next day or two. (And maybe cozy up to a bowl of chicken soup.)

But if your heart rate is a beat or two lower, you'll know that your workout regimen — the one tailored for your precise fitness level, body shape and blood type — is progressing nicely. You'll polish your pearly whites with an electronic toothbrush that will tell you if you've brushed long enough or if you missed a spot, and will compile that information for your next dental visit.

Over the course of the day, you'll eat meals designed for your body type, family health history and fitness goals. (Luckily, you won't have to bother with dreaded food diaries because sensors in your plate, fork and even food scales and containers will do most of the work.)

You'll be able to order blood panels and Skype with healthcare professionals halfway around the globe (and for a quarter of the price). And you can continuously monitor yourself — or a loved one, such as an aging parent — for key health markers such as blood pressure, glucose and hydration levels, inflammation, oxygenation and even the quality of your waste.

At this point, you may be thinking, "Why would I want to know all that?"

But others wonder why wouldn't you want to know all that.

"We're all very unique, and everybody has a different lifestyle," said Shawn G. DuBravac, the senior director of research for the Consumer Electronics Assn., which just wrapped up its annual Las Vegas trade show, where many new gadgets and gizmos were unveiled, including that interactive toothbrush. "A data stream allows for a customized approach to your health."

All those personalized data will be seamlessly harvested, synthesized and organized into a personalized dashboard that provides you — and anyone you choose — with the biofeedback you'll need to continually tweak and finesse your way to optimal health.

That's why Sally Edwards, a member of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame and fitness coach, is a proponent of heart-rate training, a trend she expects will spike as more wearables offer it. (Industry leader Fitbit just introduced two fitness trackers that measure heart beats per minute.)

"Your heart rate is individual to you. It's like your fingerprint," Edwards said. "This is the way cardiovascular exercise should be prescribed. The days of saying "Everybody go hard" are over. This individualizes the workout to each person's individual physiology."

Experts say this "datafied" future will eliminate the gap between the haves and the have-nots when it comes to basic healthcare. As smartphones become widely available, healthcare becomes more widely available. "It's really the democratization of medicine," Topol said. "Everyone will have access to this knowledge."

The bigger challenge, he said, will be bridging the gap with the less tech-savvy among us and making sure they aren't left behind.

In many ways, the datafied future is already here, as much of that data are available but not yet used.

The challenge, DuBravac said, will be to gather information from multiple sources and present it in a way that inspires more healthful activity and doesn't drive users to hypochondria.

Does your fitness tracker, for instance, motivate you to move 10,000 steps a day over the long run? But what if it alerted you that on days when you get 30 minutes less sleep than usual you tend to miss your goal?

"That might motivate you to get more sleep," DuBravac said.

The day for such an interface is drawing closer, he said, and the segments of the population that might benefit the most are baby boomers and their caretakers.

The potential uses are limitless if you look at the world as one big potential sensor, Topol said.

What if you were able to get an alert that your elderly mother's blood pressure was lower than usual, based on a wrist sensor? You could call and make sure she takes her medicine before something serious happens. A car's steering wheel could trigger an insulin warning for diabetics. Nano-sensors released in the bloodstream could monitor for heart attacks, autoimmune attacks, cancer and strokes before they happen, Topol said.

A microchip embedded in a pill could help document when someone takes — or fails to take — medication. "Study after study shows that 50% of people of all types don't take their medicines the way they are prescribed. We can do a lot better if we can track it."

The ability to monitor vital signs could even allow a stable patient to recuperate at home instead of in a hospital bed.

"I don't see this as Big Brother," Topol said. "You can keep all this information to yourself; you don't have to share it with anyone. You are in the driver's seat."Read more at:red formal dresses

Wedding season and memories of fao mara

It was sometime around late 80s when I was whiling away a late winter evening by the Eskaton Garden Road, rats playing piano in the stomach. Back then, regular pocket money meant Tk10 at the most, and half of it went to buy cigarettes.

Anyway, when it seemed that some nourishment was badly needed, I saw a group of friends from the officers’ colony opposite the Navy chief’s residence walking towards us. Since they all looked neat, I could not resist asking where they were headed.

“Chol fao maira ashi,” they said.

Right, some of you may be a bit perplexed by the term “fao mara.” It’s a colloquial term which actually means gatecrashing a party, in this case, a wedding feast.

Oscar Wilde had always been my favourite, and recalling his line “never say no to adventure,” I was up for it.

The entire brigade walked in, had a marvellous dinner, and came out satisfied. The trick is, when you are part of a group, fear hardly touches you. And we also had a fool-proof strategy. Divide the group in three sections, sit at different tables and then, wave at one other vigorously as if we had met after a long time. This method sends the message that there are people in the hall that we know, and hence dispels all suspicion.

So, the fao mara initiation done, it was time for us to get really audacious. Why wait for a group to decide if you want to get a free dinner, my late friend Bachchu asked one day.

Daring that, the plan was to go with or without a group. Since I didn’t want to appear a coward, I agreed with all enthusiasm. They won’t beat us, if we are caught, I reasoned.

Wrong. Sometimes wedding parties can get physical when young men from either the bride or the groom’s side catch and rough up gatecrashers to prove an indirect macho point to the other side.

Weddings are all about competition! Sorry, did I ruffle some feathers?

Once a fao mara took a very ugly turn when some of my pals had to interfere to stop an altercation gone out of hand between the two sides. The reason was trivial. The custom of putting up coffee points was at its infancy, and one elderly person from the groom’s side, in his simplicity, asked if the brew had sugar in it or if it had to be added.

This comment managed to filter through, and some callous relative of the bride’s side passed a snide comment, saying that the girl was being sent to the wrong family, meaning she was being downgraded in social status.

These people have never drunk coffee …

Talk about throwing a match into a stack of crackers!

One thing led to another, and guys from both sides were soon at it; daggers drawn, literally, because in fury someone had picked up the carving knife placed before the solemn-looking roasted goat decorated with carrots.

The goat didn’t say no …

Thankfully, we had a political cadre with us, and sensing his moment, took over, shouting assertively his party position, and naturally we followed. Oi, we are local polapain, meaning we are local guys and this line always works like magic!

The groom’s family was dissuaded from leaving the spot, but the problem began when the girl, after the marriage was registered, refused to go to the boy’s house. Someone from her side had overheard this line: Bashae cholo tarpor bujhamu moja (let her come to her husband’s home first, then we shall see …)

In the end, it was decided that the couple would be staying at the home of our political leader, who was already the centre of attention.

Bhai, which side do you represent, someone tried to ask meekly. But when the leader reached for his waistline with an icy glare, all questions stopped!

Oi machine bair kor (oi, take out the machines), was enough to settle all curiosity!

In what turned out to be an eventful night, we came back with a married couple and a roasted goat!

It was a love marriage, and the guy and the girl had met at university. For the time being, catastrophe was averted, though in the long run, it did not last.

Both the girl and the boy re-married, and the leader, along with all of us, was invited. This time, there were no coffee machines!

At one point, the fao mara had become so ingrained in our circle, that on Fridays, we hardly ate at home and went about the city looking for the right community centre (wedding crawling as opposed to pub crawling).

One day I took a senior friend, a French teacher, to Shohag where a wedding was on, and he was under the impression that I was invited. Halfway through the meal he asked, whose wedding is this, and when I just looked at him and smiled, his jaws dropped. Mon dieu, was all he could say …

From that moment, he could not eat properly, and was looking around like a trapped rabbit, imagining that people were eyeing him suspiciously.

Anyway, I miss those days of reckless fun. We were short of money, but with a little courage, managed to have some great meals. To be honest, one of my pals became so comfortable that he could also confidently ask the waiter: Mamu, rezalar plate change koren to!Read more at:one shoulder formal dresses | mermaid formal dresses

At Waste Fest, Fergusson College students perform ‘garbage musical’

waste fest, fergusson college, wonders from waste, garbage musical
(Photo:short formal dresses australia)

To demonstrate how effectively waste can be put to use, a group of youngsters organised a ‘Waste festival’ at Fergusson College on Monday. Covering performance in a ‘garbage musical’, a fashion show out of waste materials and an exhibition of utility items made out of discarded material, the show aimed to create awareness on the need to ‘refuse’ the items in our life that we do not require.

A ‘rock’ band performed with discarded wooden boxes, television monitors, compact discs and used plastic bottles while young students from the third year Arts degree course walked down the ramp dressed in old newspapers and skirts decorated with flashy CDs. Hrishikesh, the coordinator of the festival, a third year BA student, who also prefers to be known as WiFi, said, “The aim is to create awareness about waste management — especially the safe disposal of electronic waste.”

The Social Outreach and Enabling Centre of Fergusson College, as part of the Kirloskar Vasundhara festival, conducted the festival along with the Environmental Sciences department. Ashwinova, another third year BA student at Fergusson College, said that the focus is also on electronic waste and how it should be handled. According to Aishwarya Joshi, from the Social Outreach and Enabling Centre, the aim for waste management is to reduce, reuse and recycle. But why can’t we ‘refuse’ the items that we do not require, the students asked, through their unique display at the festival.

There is no comprehensive and updated inventory of e-waste in the country but as per preliminary estimates, the annual e-waste generation in India has been estimated to be 0.8 million tonne by 2012. A UN report estimates that the worldwide generation of e-waste is around 30 to 50 million tonne per annum.

Electronic components are increasingly made from recycled materials, for example for making new LCDs, more than 50% of indium is sourced by recycling used LCDs. The e-waste presents a scenario of urban mining for recovery of ferrous, non-ferrous and rare earth metal and precious metal in addition to plastics and glass. However, the presence of hazardous and toxic substances in the component of e-waste necessitates environmentally sound management of e-waste including collection and recycling and treatment in an environmentally sound manner, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) officials said.

The e-waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2011 have been notified with the aim to channel the e-waste generated in the country for environmentally sound recycling. According to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board authorities there are some 20 e-waste dismantlers in Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad. SwaCH — a collective that has been authorised by Pune Municipal Corporation to collect 600 tonnes of garbage, out of which 140 tonnes is dry — covers nearly four lakh households. SwaCH volunteers who were also present at the festival said that more awareness needs to be created on the effective management of waste.Read more at:long evening dresses australia

A wife is not a trophy

U.S. actor George Clooney and British lawyer Amal Alamuddin leave the palazzo Ca Farsetti on a taxi boat on September 29, 2014 in Venice, after a civil ceremony.
(Photo:purple formal dresses)

Trophies are placeholders for merit. They represent an accomplishment. We give them to kids for scoring lots of goals. In a particular Canadian trophy tradition, we pass around a chunk of silver alloy, sip champagne from its bowl, engrave it with the name of the winning team, and tour it around to be photographed.

Trophies also carry gruesome connotations. They are, literally, appendages of war and serial murder. We similarly associate trophies with the hunt, where an antler stands in for man’s command over moose.

Trophies are about power. They are collected by the one who has dominated the other. Not indicative of just any accomplishment, like adding superfoods to your diet or becoming more mindful, trophies announce that you had power over a thing that didn’t.

A trophy is also a thing we call women.

The trophy wife: the derogatory name given to a woman seen as having little to offer her male partner besides her physical attractiveness. Since women’s conformity to a narrow beauty ideal is paid such a premium in our culture, this woman is seen as a status symbol for her usually older, always wealthier, husband.

Unfortunately for modern women, the term has been bobbing around again — and not in ways we might like. In 2013, ABC Studios launched the apparently ironic “Trophy Wife” — a now-defunct sitcom starring Malin Akerman, who played a “reformed party girl” and third wife of a lawyer.

In a disquieting twist, in 2014, the term appeared in reference to Amal Alamuddin’s marriage to George Clooney. This time, we were meant to be happy about it. An article in the Globe and Mail announced the Clooney-Alamuddin wedding as “a revolution of sorts in Trophy Wife-ism.” The Globe noted that Amal Clooney’s proven intellectual agility and career success outweigh those of other famous women who have married famous men. After all, “Ms. Amal is fluent in French, English, Arabic, and perfect.”

In December, Kristen Houghton for the Huffington Post gave us “the new trophy wife,” which, she argued, “has taken on a new, more upscale meaning” since “men are finding the most attractive and sexually desirable women are not brainless beauties whose sole function is to look good and stay quiet, but women who are making good money and are in positions of power.”

Let’s break this down, shall we? While it might be tempting to get excited by the addition of “smart” to a list of women’s qualifications, this new and improved trophy wife only narrows the definition of ideal, marriageable femininity. First of all, to be a status symbol, a woman must be heterosexual and seeking marriage. Second, she must now be skinny, conventionally pretty, intellectually ambitious, and rich enough to afford Oscar de la Renta to be deemed trophy material. And while we narrow down the ideal, marriageable woman, dragging with us a host of assumptions about her desire and ambition, we continue to objectify her, in true trophy fashion.

The new trophy wife, as embodied by Amal Clooney, reproduces a climate where women should still aspire to be objects of male achievement through marriage. Barbara Walters perfectly conveys this notion in naming Amal Clooney the “most fascinating person” of 2014 and calling her marriage to George Clooney “one of the greatest achievements in human history.” While Walters’s tongue may have been in cheek — but who knows — I have a feeling Amal Clooney would list other accomplishments as her proudest. Like, I don’t know, advising Kofi Annan. Like graduating from Oxford and New York University.

Objectifying women is not the only problem with new trophy wife-ism. More to the issue is the fact that we are encouraged to see women’s expanding credentials as a step forward.

Back in 2004, Psychology Today announced the “rise of the power bride” — men’s supposedly new interest in a woman who can hold a steady job, or, their desire for a “high-octane wife.” The article argues that an unstable economy may lead to “peer marriage,” or marriage among couples with similar credentials, since single-earning families are less financially secure than in the past.

In the context of an unstable economy and the rise of dual-income families, our retention of the word “trophy” should tell us that the “peer” in “peer marriage” does not mean women and men are considered equals.

In a disturbing though unsurprising explanation of the Amal factor, anthropologist Stephen Juan tells the Today Show what a “really strong man” wants, accepting that now — thank goodness! — “wives can be beautiful, intelligent and have careers and opinions just as strong as their partner.” Can they? How encouraging!

In an age when misogyny is marked by domestic violence, murdered aboriginal women, and rape culture, our depiction of this new woman-trophy as optimistic is more disconcerting than funny. The fact that we see “progress” in a trophy who is changing shape — or, more accurately, lengthening her résumé — is grim. The new trophy wife, perched at the intersection of classism, (hetero)sexism, ableism, and an astonishingly narrow beauty ideal, is not about Amal Clooney. It is about our culture of objectifying women and positioning them as indicators of male success. Plainly, it is about the objectification of women remaining so normalized that we can hardly pin it down.

Author and filmmaker Jean Kilbourne connects objectification to violence in her documentary film Killing Us Softly. Examining gender, advertising, and popular culture, Kilbourne argues that when we objectify women, we subject them to violence because it is easier to reconcile violence against someone who is already dehumanized.

Amal Clooney’s rise to Hollywood fame has shown that we thirst for new representations of women. But we can’t help but view her “success” through the male gaze of the media. If only we were at the point where women could demand more from our culture than “It’s okay to be smart.”Read more at:orange formal dresses
